Section A — Reading
One fiction extract. Question 1 is short retrieval; Questions 2–4 ask you to analyse language, analyse structure, and evaluate a statement (40 marks total).
Section B — Writing
One descriptive or narrative task (Question 5). Choice of two prompts; 40 marks split across AO5 and AO6.

How should I split my time on Paper 1?
Aim for roughly 15 minutes to read the extract carefully, about 45 minutes on Section A (with most time on Question 4), and about 45 minutes on Question 5 including a short plan and proofread.
Is Question 1 covered in these guides?
Question 1 is short retrieval and is not part of this series. The guides focus on Questions 2–5, where most marks and most search demand sit.
What is the difference between Questions 2 and 3?
Question 2 asks how language creates effects; Question 3 asks how structure shapes the reader's journey through the extract. Both are AO2, but the toolkit differs.
